America Crossing The Rubicon

My fellow Americans, I hereby put a call forward that we all step outside for a moment. It is with great difficulty that I moderate my tone, but it is my sincere goal to match one spark of the great Daniel Webster. I am no conqueror of words, nor any master of Cicero; no, I am a young American of the twenty first century calling upon the words of men God gave the grace to lead our nations path. I fear we are about to cross a road we cannot retreat from. This road I speak of is not a one issue symbol, but a box full of unintended consequences to all walks of life.

We have forgotten what it means to be American for those who dream our dreams. Multiple generations before us have paid for our luxury. Dirt floors, dust bowls, and blue blizzards crushed those who toiled in our name. Today so few bother to remember them, so few regard our father’s true continence. We have consumed new levels of excess leaving us devoid of higher need. We have shelved temperance. How little of moderation do we comprehend? Emoting over triviality is not only clever comedy, but heralded as new religion. Concessions have become shackles born upon us by indefatigable legislation. Our information age is vacuous in meaning. American High school’s matriculate children who know not the three branches of U.S. government. College freshmen struggle to know Caesar marched against Rome and Winston Churchill was prime minister and distinguished lion of the Briton’s. Modern feminism requires one to pursue the public display of bare fruit as the last bastion of equality. The sciences are ignored when inconvenient and then vociferously paraded as the only means to subjugate religious foes. Needless to say, an unsustainable level of tension is feeding political and moral dissonance.

It is often said in times of great need that men and women of incomparable ability ascend at the right moment. I believe we are standing at the edge, with shallow breath we await the presence of virtuous reason. It isn’t common sense that has evaded us per se, but a vacant rich tone from which wisdom fills our eardrums and excites our senses. One who sounds so clear, speaking in terms so simple, we will wonder if we are hearing music from heaven, or our death knell.

Presently a fence divides those who are set, but it is the cumbersome fickle who are no Good Samaritan. Conservatives are derided for want of renewed liberty; liberals fervid with the idea of redistributed wealth are disingenuously calling it equality for all. Libertarian’s are growing in resentment and dangerously choosing isolation. The Green Party increases its anti-human platform. These are the bridges that are “too far.” Eagerly America hopes for a leader of direction. In our partisan clicking, how will the country move forward? Are the Greeks to be found correct? Can this Republic stand? Or will the feuding once again divide our house? Are our universities fashioning themselves as the new aristocracy? Our battle of grey matter is never ceasing. Whoa American’s, step outside for a moment and lets reexamine the road we are about to cross. I close this thought with the words of wisdoms past, words that were to be memorized by school children for generation’s, words spoken by great minds that are no longer taught with reverence but indifference, if taught at all.

“I have not allowed myself, sir, to look beyond the Union , to see what might be hidden in the dark recess behind. I have not coolly weighed the chances of preserving liberty when the bonds that unite us together shall be broken asunder. I have not accustomed myself to hang over the precipice of disunion, to see whether, with my short sight, I can fathom the depth of the abyss below; nor could I regard him as a safe counselor in the affairs in this government whose thoughts should be mainly bent on considering, not how the Union may be best preserved but how tolerable might be the condition of the people when it should be broken up and destroyed. While the Union lasts, we have high, exciting, gratifying prospects spread out before us, for us and our children. Beyond that I seek not to penetrate the veil.

God grant that in my day, at least, that curtain may not rise! God grant that on my vision never may be opened what lies behind! When my eyes shall be turned to behold for the last time the sun in heaven, may I not see him shining on the broken and dishonored fragments of a once glorious Union; on states dissevered, discordant, belligerent; on a land rent with civil feuds, or drenched, it may be, in fraternal blood! Let their last feeble and lingering glance rather behold the gorgeous ensign of the republic, now known and honored throughout the earth, still full high advanced, its arms and trophies streaming in their original luster, not a stripe erased or polluted, nor a single star obscured, bearing for its motto, no such miserable interrogatory as “What is all this worth?” nor those other words of delusion and folly, “Liberty first and Union afterwards”; but everywhere, spread all over in characters of living light, blazing on all its ample folds, as they float over the sea and over the land, and in every wind under the whole heavens, that other sentiment, dear to every true American heart- Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable.”

My fellow Americans, how could it be that we as a nation founded on conviction of the human soul, cannot recognize the progeny staring back in the mirror? Have we not seen the bright spots of free principals vindicated over our triumphs against tyrants? Have we also not seen the ugly consequences of turning our back on allies and breaking promises to defend liberty? Can you recognize the distraction our ‘gadgetry society’ has become? Just what is it that we are fighting for these days? Why did it take someone as ideologically extreme as Barack Obama to wake up our enabling nation? Short answer; moral atrophy.

Our republic is in decline not because people are struggling to pay their bills, but because people are struggling to inspect who their representatives are. We deserve who we vote into office, this country asked for Barack Obama because they thought it would be an emotional feel good moment. “We the people” didn’t inspect the goods being advertised. When are we going to stop doing what is popular and get back to doing what is right? Much like those famous Methamphetamine billboards, America hooked on leftist ideology reflects those bruised, damaged and emotionally bankrupt teens. Sugary social programs account for the decay in our society. Politically correct, self-esteem infused, gender neutral school yard games are the causation of soft, unequipped children. We have to get back to principals that choose depravation for good over satisfaction and debt. Do you know what your kids know? Can your teenagers who are going off to college name the founders and who wrote what documents?

The left has hijacked “our children are the future” for their indoctrination agenda. Its time we take back our children’s minds. We need to wag a ‘grey matter war’ on intellectual property. Grassroots organizations begin under our roofs. Pamphlet’s producing modern concepts of “Common Sense” are typed on our keyboards. I repeat my theme out of necessity. I cannot go far enough to extol the virtues of family values, while denouncing the hype of egalitarianism. Please do not confuse treating citizens as equals with demanding everyone have the same level of lousy healthcare. Only the selfish begrudge those who live in nicer neighborhoods. We should refocus on our works, our ability to change for the better and extending our hand to others in time of solace.

In closing, every freedom loving home should own William Bennett’s two volume set “America; the last best hope” available for family and friends to get reacquainted with why America is special. You Brit's dig up your Churchill, bring forth thy Shakespeare and re-read your Pitt, Disraeli and Peel. French brothers, you must miss the romance of Voltaire?
