Pet Marriage

Marriage has gone to the dogs

First let me say that I seriously deliberated before writing about this story. I haven’t polished this hub with my usual flair; my anger got the best of me. I generally never pick a mundane news piece and report about them on my hubs, but, this was tailor made for the “too stupid to live category.”

Ernie Rubin and Ann Carter of Palm Desert California decided to throw a $5,000 wedding ceremony for their pooches “Scruffy and Snickers.” The owners had customer couture tuxedo and dress made for the dogs to wear in the event. In tow were a ring boy, flower girl, groomsmen and usher. Rubin and Carter made sure to include a wedding cake, open bar (that part I understand) and security. It was reported that 100 guests attended and even got to enjoy a live band.

$5,000 wedding ceremony…California…Palm Desert Country Club…for pet dogs.

I now no longer guess why California is so backward, so self-centered and in such deep debt. For full disclosure, Rubin and Carter pulled the wedding off as a fundraising stunt for the “Orphan Pet Oasis Humane Society of the Desert” in North Palm Springs. So in raising money for a humane society, they decided to blow a whole lot of it on mocking marriage and the poor who could never afford such a lavish wedding; how California of them.

Now, it is entirely my opinion that interjects the mocking of both marriage and the poor on this couples behalf. I personally do not know their agenda, other than what the obvious shows us. Nevertheless, these two have inadvertently created a well-deserved doggie doo doo storm. I have nothing but contempt for this couples naivety and poor taste of judgment. Folks, the thing about this is, I never would have mentioned their names, wrote this story or found it in the news had they just phoned some friends, threw an intimate dinner party at their home and quietly donated all that money to the Humane Society. Instead, they proved how some rich people are too stupid for their own good and really don’t deserve all the pleasures they are afforded.

Not too long ago, I’ve written a few hubs defending the wealthy; I suppose it was inevitable I would need to write about a few worthy of ridicule. Moreover, this story brings us to a deeper judgment and uncovering of values. I fully expect this hub will land me in the cross hairs of pet lovers, yet the human side of suffering in 2012 out prioritizes an “Orphan Pet Oasis” any day of the week. There is a certain sickness with our American society, where we place animals far above the needs of humans. Now, there is no advocating of walking away from animal care or trying to save abused animals, but for crying out loud, these people need to pull their head out of their sheltered and insulated asses. This commentary deeply troubles me, I do not find satisfaction from having to call out a pair of complete idiots. Furthermore, how do we move forward with the American dream in light of this?

California is dragging down our entire country with its debts. The very rich are complaining about tax burdens and over regulation, views I often side with, that is until this story. Jerry Brown want’s a $100 “BILLION” dollar railway to create jobs. I’d really like to isolate Rubin and Carter’s poor use of judgment; it would be far easier to turn this into Shakespearian satire, but the news cycle won’t let me. There is an onslaught of over the top behavior flashing before our eyes. Television has brought us the latest version of lifestyles of the rich and famous with “MTV Cribs,” a show where we salivate or gag on what passes for taste and use of wealth. We have watched celebrity darlings like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Brynes, the Kardashian’s and Charlie Sheen grow up to be caricatures of wealth. Generally we should ignore what the rich and famous can do; so what if Britney Spears bought a $20,000 dollar bra, or Eric Clapton has a custom made, one of a kind Ferrari he paid 4.6 million dollars for. I pay little mind to Donald Trump’s 100 million dollar 757 Jetliner and I certainly do not care that Richard Branson owns a private island. Maybe you can tell me why a $5,000 dog wedding in southern California has my hackles up while previous celebrity excesses influenced me little. Truthfully, it’s all getting to be a little too much…
